NEW YORK LAW JOURNAL PUBLISHES SPECIAL REPORT ON APPELLATE PRACTICE AUTHORED BY HON. PETER B. SKELOS
NAM is proud to announce that the New York Law Journal will be publishing an article written by the Honorable Peter B. Skelos. The article, Preparation for Oral Argument of Your Appeal, will be published on Monday, April 10, 2017 as part of its Appellate Practice Special Report.
In the article, Hon. Skelos reflects on his 11 years of experience as an appellate jurist and discusses his views on the significance of the oral argument. He explains that it is counsel’s final opportunity to “solidify the judge who is in your favor, tip the scales of the judge who is undecided, and yes, you may even move the judge who was leaning in favor of the adverse position.”
Judge Skelos addresses the importance of the appellate advocate’s advanced preparation which includes familiarity with the brief as well as opposing counsel’s and thoroughly knowing the facts and the law that support the appeal. Judge Skelos states in the article, “The chances of the court throwing you softballs during oral argument are slim. You must be ready for hard questions, the questions which, if not satisfactorily addressed, may undermine the success of your appeal.”
Hon. Peter B. Skelos is a former Associate Justice of the Appellate Division, 2nd Department. He is well-versed in the law and is a highly regarded mediator and arbitrator for NAM. He hears a wide variety of case types including construction, commercial, professional liability, insurance coverage, matrimonial, medical malpractice and personal injury matters. Judge Skelos was voted a Top Ten Mediator by the 2016 New York Law Journal Annual Reader Rankings Survey.
Judge Skelos is available to arbitrate and mediate cases throughout the New York Metro area.
