NAM is pleased to announce that panel member, the Hon. Elizabeth Bonina, former Justice of the Supreme Court of the State of New York, Kings Co., will be receiving the Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award from the Alumni Board of Governors of the Poly Prep Country Day School of Brooklyn. Poly Prep was founded in 1854 and prides itself on progressive, academic excellence that includes emphasis on athletics and the arts. The school’s generations of graduates have become some of the nation’s leading entrepreneurs and professionals. Poly Prep advocates educating “the whole student: mind, body and—above all—character in a rigorous yet supportive academic setting.” Judge Bonina graduated in Poly Prep’s first co-ed class in 1979.

In addition to her time on the Supreme Court bench, Judge Bonina had a fifteen year career as an Administrative Law Judge for the City of New York, including nearly six years as the Chief Administrative Law Judge at the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission.

After leaving the bench, Judge Bonina joined NAM where she arbitrates and mediates a wide variety of personal injury, motor vehicle, premises liability, sports and recreation liability, labor law matters and cases involving complex coverage issues.

Judge Bonina has been ranked by the New York Law Journal as the #1 arbitrator in New York State in 2013, and as one of the top ten mediators in New York State each year since 2010. She earned her B.A. from Villanova University and her J.D. from Brooklyn Law School, where she was awarded the Edward V. Sparer Public Interest Law Fellowship and the American Jurisprudence Award in Trial Advocacy.

For the past ten years, Judge Bonina has been an Adjunct Professor of Business Law I, Business Law II and Sports Law at St. Joseph’s College in Brooklyn, New York. She has also served as a referee/court examiner pursuant to Article 81 of the Mental Hygiene Law. From 1991 to 1998, Judge Bonina was a partner and the managing attorney at Bonina & Bonina, P.C.

Judge Bonina is active in many bar associations. As chairperson of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee at the Brooklyn Bar Association, Judge Bonina has lectured at various CLE programs. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Bay Ridge Lawyers Association, as well as the co-chair of its Good & Welfare Committee. She is also a member of the New York State Academy of Trial Lawyers, the Catholic Lawyers Guild and the Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association. Previously, Judge Bonina served for nine years on the Board of Directors of the New York State Trial Lawyers Association, and six years as a Dean of the New York State Trial Lawyers Institute.

Believing in the importance of “giving back” to the community, Judge Bonina has served as a volunteer arbitrator in Small Claims Court. For over 20 years, she co-chaired the Brooklyn Toys for Tots Committee, collecting thousands of toys for deserving children and distributing them through local charitable organizations.

The Award ceremony will take place at 11:00 am on Saturday, April 26, 2014 during the Convocation and Awards Presentation of the Special Reunion 2014, at Commons Hall, Poly Prep’s Dyker Heights Campus located at 9216 Seventh Avenue, Brooklyn, New York.
